25 Random Things About Me, Continued:
16) During my later "goody-goody" college years, I became very involved in many liberal causes. I was a founding member of the campus "Environmental Club" (which brought recycling to campus in our first year, and did fun things like river rafting trips to pick up litter left behind from the fraternity rafting trips). I participated in the Young Democrats, and worked on several local and national democratic campaigns (I had to make up for that Bush/Quayle Vote from 88!). I was one of only 4 members of the "Student Voter's Association, " which brought voter registration to campus for the first time (believe it or not, the conservative county auditor's office would not allow voter registration on campus, claiming that students were not residents of the county, and they made it extremely difficult for us to do voter registration; we registered several thousand voters in our first voter drive despite them!). And as part of my job as Social Justice Campus Minister, I organized all kinds of events, like AIDS speaker panels (back when it was still thought of as "the gay plague"), and the Urban Plunge, where college students went to Spokane for Spring Break and did community service work, like working at soup kitchens and shelters, and building for Habitat for Humanity. I was a really good little hippie (except for the sex and drugs, about which I was still rather prude).
