Dawn & Jill, Graduation Party, 1987

Jill and I have had an ongoing debate for years now: were we geeks in high school, or not? I argue that yes, we were, while she insists that while we weren't the popular crowd, we weren't geeks.

Here's the evidice; you decide!

Dawn and Jill's resume, mid-1980's:
Debate Team
Orchestra
Best friends: Journalism Club, Band
Chess Team (just kidding)

In case the evidence isn't heavy enough, here are some pictures of our gang from junior high and high school (what I want to know is why no one ever suggested I pluck my eyebrows until college).

Just kidding, Jill. We were just normal kids who were very lucky to have each other for friends.

A very happy birthday to you. I hope our friendship lasts through many more decades (and I hope "80's Retro" never becomes a fashion trend).

Band was cool in my high school (I graduated in '98!). No, really, I swear! My senior year, about 2/5ths of the entire high school was in band or chorus. I hesitate to admit I was in band to people outside my town, because it has a whole stigma to it that I never knew about.

Maybe it's because you weren't required to actually be *good*... you just got to go on free trips.

But anyway, I think you guys look pretty cool. I'll bet you weren't as geeky as you think you were (or the cool kids were a lot geekier than you remember). It's all relative anyway.

I don't think you were geeks per say. Maybe band geeks. ;)

I was a geek definately. I took tons of computer classes and I was the guy everyone came to when they had computer problems both in and out of school. And that was only in 96.

Graduation party ... I won a gumball machine that night ... still sitting in my living room. That was a great night, followed up by a week in Hawaii with Thatcher, Brendan, Jim, Tom, Brian Johnson and the rest of the journalism crew. I had my first of many all-night benders there. Good times.

Funny that Maddie's wearing a cat shirt in that picture. Prophetic. ;)

Nice tribute page for Maddie by the way. Thank the deities above that you don't have any pictures of me from those days ... talk about a geek ... Boy Scouts, Journalism Staff, Debate Team. Yep, geek, only without the glasses or the Depeche Mode tour shirt.

I recognized most of the people in your tribute page ... Jill, Dawn, Kelley, Jeff Whatshisface, Cynthia ... I recognize everyone's faces actually, just don't remember their names right at this moment. Must be the still-lingering alcohol-induced fog from the all-night Poker game following the Gonzaga nailbiter against San Diego.

For what its worth I didn't think you were a debate geek or an orchestra geek by any means. I mean at least you weren't on a two-man debate team with Scott Noe like some people. COUGH.

I was waiting, I knew David couldn't resist posting... (and by the way, now you've thrown down the gauntlet, *some* of us DO have pictures of you from those days - now if Dawn cares to do anything with them, say come this August, that's her business...)

Anyway, as I always tell Dawn when she brings this up - I firmly believe we were in that under-the-radar nondescript "middle" crowd. She used to call us nerds, but nerds or geeks, I don't think we were either. Primarily because we both had interpersonal social skills, knew how to dress ourselves (as well as anyone in the '80s did, anyhow), and had friends in various different "cliques". I admit up front we were definitely not part of the cool crowd either....just somewhere in between.

Lastly and most importantly, I just want to give my heartfelt thanks to Dawn for putting so much energy into celebrating my birthday and our friendship. We go back a mighty long way and I love her dearly.

Ran across this post today and had to laugh at my comment about hoping 80's retro never became a fashion trend...only a year and a bit later, and it's happened!!!! Gah!
